Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is research that investigates effective teaching strategies and how we best learn. Some of the questions SoTL research is well positioned to answer include: What impact did a given strategy have on student learning? How do students perceive a given teaching technique? Are some teaching strategies more effective than other when teaching a particular concept? The results of these investigations provide the evidence-based practices that inform scholarly teaching.

Why Use This Strategy?
- “The systematic creation of rigorous knowledge about teaching and learning is a crucial prerequisite to responding to major challenges facing academia” (p. 1174).
- Faculty should conduct SoTL to improve teaching so students learn more effectively, to provide evidence of your effectiveness, to publish or present work, and to share work with others so they can learn from you.
Top Tips
- Seven Steps to SoTL
- Identify your problem
- Identify research question
- Review literature
- Design study
- Conduct study
- Analyze data and draw conclusions
- Present or Publish work
- Consider using a SoTL Planning Worksheet to get started and help you develop your project.
- Are you looking for a journal to publish your SoTL work in? Check out Kennesaw State University’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Teaching Journals Directory.
