Poll Everywhere is a web-based technology that allows audience members to engage in interactive presentations, virtual classrooms, and other learning tools.
Are you new to Poll Everywhere or an experienced Presenter who wants to improve your audience participation? If you answered yes to either question, please follow these helpful tips to improve polling responses:
- Give instructions upfront.
Before your first poll, tell the audience that you will be asking them to participate
using their electronic devices. Giving clear instructions up front sets expectations and encourages participation. - Do a practice poll.
Start your session with a practice poll, I suggest a fun icebreaker (i.e., current events or pop culture). Doing so gives your audience time to retrieve their devices and learn how to participate in a low-pressure setting. - Slow down.
Embrace the process as you wait for responses. Poll Everywhere suggests Presenters allow 90 seconds for the first poll, then 30-45 seconds for polls thereafter. As your audience becomes familiar with responding, pick up the pace. - Mix it up.
Make sure polls are spaced out in the presentation and that your audience will be interested in learning their consensus. Doing so prevents the loss of participants’ attention and increases their participation. - Offer incentives.
If there is an incentive to participate, “poll fatigue” is not usually an issue. Examples include making the poll a game or competition or giving extra credit or bonus points. These are only suggestions.
