As our student body becomes more diverse, meeting the unique needs of English language learners (ELL) has become a priority for many educators. Meeting the needs of these learners can help meet the healthcare needs of the increasingly culturally and linguistically diverse population of the United States. By engaging with the research on ELL education effective practices, we can educate a diverse group of health care professionals capable of meeting the challenges of an increasingly diverse population.

- Meeting the needs of ELLs is important because the number of ELLs is steadily increasing:
- “In higher education, the number of ELLs has been steadily growing in part due to increases in immigration and more international students coming to study on U.S. campuses.” Bergey, 2018, 2. https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED585543.pdf
- The needs of ELL students are not currently being met.
- Students should be given the opportunity to “learn how to locate, interpret and evaluate relevant sources on a question and to summarize, synthesize and critique research findings.” (Lum, 2015, 10)
- ELL students benefit from proactively engaging with campus support services like the Office of Student Success.
- Faculty should clarify the exact purpose of assignments, provide explicit guidelines, sample papers, and opportunities to write multiple drafts, where possible. (Lum, 2018, 19)
